Saab 96 Rally – gas pedal mod

And the two-stroke gas pedal installed.

Just a short update: I did the rally style gas pedal modification and replaced the V4 pedal with the bigger two-stroke pedal. And I’m willing to part with some “junk” at quite reasonable prices. I’m happy to get rid of these. Make me an offer. Also – I have now sold most of my unneeded… Continue reading Saab 96 Rally – gas pedal mod

Saab V4 Rally – miscellaneous stuff

Saab 99 radiator. The core supports need to be removed.

Just a quick update on a few bits and pieces: I had this 1.7 crankshaft that needed grinding for under size bearings. But as it happened bearings in the sizes I needed were not that easy to get. I needed 0.50mm for the connecting rods and the full 1mm for the main bearings. Standard sizes… Continue reading Saab V4 Rally – miscellaneous stuff

Saab V4 Rally – electrical system

Time to figure out all the electrics. There's quite a few changes to the original setup.

I started figuring out the electrical system on the V4 “Rally”. It’s a bit of a mess really… 😀 Old wires, unmarked wires, and all sorts of iffy connections… The original wiring system had quite a few “hacks” already, and now I needed to do some more to make the wiring work with the two-stroke… Continue reading Saab V4 Rally – electrical system

Saab V4 Rally – suspension, brakes, and dash underway

The oil pressure warning light. It's nice to have a huge red light telling you that you already blew the engine...

Here’s the latest update on the 1969 V4 Rally. Suspension and brakes are now done, so I have moved on to the electrics and the dashboard. I also made a work light for the engine bay: And I started preparing the dashboard. As I’m putting in the older type dash all sorts of minor adjustments… Continue reading Saab V4 Rally – suspension, brakes, and dash underway

Saab V4 Rally – working on the exhaust system, done!

The rear section. All the bolts will be ground short to reduce the chances of them being torn away.

We got the exhaust system done. It’s been strengthened and also some protective plates added to places that are going to be hit by gravel and stones from the front wheels. The next order of business is putting the car on its wheels and move on to the interior and engine. Mounting points: Putting the… Continue reading Saab V4 Rally – working on the exhaust system, done!

Saab V4 Rally – working on the exhaust system

And the exits under the car.

We started to make the exhaust system as it is much easier to do now that the car is still suspended on the “grill”. After we get it done it’s time put in rest of the suspension, drop the car on it’s wheels, and start putting stuff in (like the dash, heating, etc.). The exhaust… Continue reading Saab V4 Rally – working on the exhaust system

Saab V4 Rally – Some new paint

The North State team color scheme was well known in Finland in the seventies. It inspired a ton of private cars and replicas with the same colors.

The V4 “Rally” is proggressing at a more or less steady pace. I got around to painting a few bits and pieces. The paint scheme is pretty close to the one the car had in the early seventies when racing.

96 Rally – Mexico brackets and some paint

And the left hand side bracket from behind.

We made a little progress on the 96 “Rally” over the weekend. We needed to fit an engine block and gearbox to make the so-called Mexico brackets for extra support. I also modified the dash by cutting away the corners, to make it fit behind the vertical rollcage tubes. And I painted a few bits… Continue reading 96 Rally – Mexico brackets and some paint
