Saab 99 Turbo part 14 – Time for some primer

Cleaning up and glass bead blasting the components.

A few photos on getting some primer on some of the suspension components and other stuff. We needed to make new fuel tank belts since the old ones were rotten and decided to use slightly thicker material for them. All the components were thoroughly cleaned using electrolysis and mechanical cleaning (glass bead blasting). Some of… Continue reading Saab 99 Turbo part 14 – Time for some primer

Non-Saab Side Project – A Singer Sewing Machine Tractor

Singer Sewing Machine Tractor

I decided to do a few small side projects. Restoration tends to get a bit monotonous so it’s nice to do something else every now and again. The first “project” was to clean up an old Monitor blow torch I got. It was relatively simple. I took it apart and used some old cleaning compound… Continue reading Non-Saab Side Project – A Singer Sewing Machine Tractor

Saab 99 Turbo Part 13 – Alternator and Starter Motor Restoration

And done. I painted the heat shield bracket with silver paint as it cannot be seen anyway.

I restored the alternator and starter motor. Pretty straightforward job other than the pulley and fan on the alternator being pretty stuck. Mostly just a bit of cleanup, glass bead blasting and new paint. I also replaced the old nuts and washers with new shiny ones. I still need to send the fan and pulley… Continue reading Saab 99 Turbo Part 13 – Alternator and Starter Motor Restoration

Saab 99 Turbo part 12 – Learning To Use Auto Body Solder

Sanding the area pretty much done.

I have seen body solder used in some custom car shows over the years, but have not tried it myself. It’s sometimes also called “lead loading” since in the golden age of Hot Rodding lead was used to fill and shape body panels. Epoxy fillers (“bondo”) were not really available back in the day so… Continue reading Saab 99 Turbo part 12 – Learning To Use Auto Body Solder

Saab 99 Turbo part 11 – restoring the brakes and suspension components

So - there we go. A few restored brake and suspension components for the 99 Turbo.

Brakes on the Saab 99 can be a bit tricky to fix these days. All the components can be found but probably not off-the-shelf at the local auto parts store. The Saab Club Sweden can help with some of the components, like seal kits. Also new dust shields are available – although not very cheap…… Continue reading Saab 99 Turbo part 11 – restoring the brakes and suspension components

Saab 99 Turbo part 10- Corrosion repair almost done

So the corrosion repairs are almost done. Basically the one major job is fixing the driver side door. More on that later.

The corrosion repair on the 99 Turbo is finally almost done. Basically what’s left to do is fixing the driver side door. The “good” doors I had turned out to be not so good… The passenger side door needed just a few patches but the driver side door needs to be re-skinned. More on that… Continue reading Saab 99 Turbo part 10- Corrosion repair almost done

Video: Engine installation in a 1964 Saab two-stroke

Video of installing the engine in a Saab 96 two stroke 1964

I did an engine re-build for fellow Saab enthusiast, including a fully restored crankshaft with all new bearings. As I got ready to installing the engine back in the car I decided to use my GoPro camera to record it. So – here you go: Engine installation in a Saab 96 two-stroke 1964 video

Saab 93B DeLuxe 1959 – Barn Find Basket Case

Saab 93B DeLuxe 1959 - Barn Find Basket Case

I got myself a 1959 Saab 93B DeLuxe. Three cylinders, 750 cc, three speed manual, suicide doors originally. Strictly speaking it’s not a barn find since the owner had it for sale, but it has stayed in a barn for 20+ years… But it most definitely is a basket case since it has been completely taken… Continue reading Saab 93B DeLuxe 1959 – Barn Find Basket Case

Using Shrinker/Stretcher to repair Saab 99 brake dust shields

I started to shrink along an edge which forces the other edge to curve. I used a little too much force which caused some big ridges. Smaller increments would have been better.

I bought a Shrinker Stretcher machine. I have seen them used on some Youtube channels and they looked pretty handy. They seem to help a lot in making tighter curves and radiuses. The English Wheel is handy also, but the Shrinker Stretcher seems to speed up some operations a lot. Also – at my skill… Continue reading Using Shrinker/Stretcher to repair Saab 99 brake dust shields
