Saab 99 Turbo part 10- Corrosion repair almost done

So the corrosion repairs are almost done. Basically the one major job is fixing the driver side door. More on that later.

The corrosion repair on the 99 Turbo is finally almost done. Basically what’s left to do is fixing the driver side door. The “good” doors I had turned out to be not so good… The passenger side door needed just a few patches but the driver side door needs to be re-skinned. More on that… Continue reading Saab 99 Turbo part 10- Corrosion repair almost done

Using Shrinker/Stretcher to repair Saab 99 brake dust shields

I started to shrink along an edge which forces the other edge to curve. I used a little too much force which caused some big ridges. Smaller increments would have been better.

I bought a Shrinker Stretcher machine. I have seen them used on some Youtube channels and they looked pretty handy. They seem to help a lot in making tighter curves and radiuses. The English Wheel is handy also, but the Shrinker Stretcher seems to speed up some operations a lot. Also – at my skill… Continue reading Using Shrinker/Stretcher to repair Saab 99 brake dust shields

99T part 8 – Spare tire compartment re-build

There wasn't a whole lot left of the original piece. Some metal work needed.

Some more metal work – The spare tire compartment floor was badly corroded on the 99 Turbo. At first I thought about making it one piece with hammer and dolly and the english wheel, but it was just a little too complex a shape for my skill level. Ultimately I came to the conclusion that the best way to repair the… Continue reading 99T part 6 – replacing the rear quarter and more welding

Building an English Wheel

The anvil wheels I got from UK through eBay (Just search for English Wheel anvil wheels or bottom rollers).

I’ve been wanting an English Wheel for a long time, but they are pretty costly pieces of equipment, and I didn’t have room for one earlier. But some suitable scrap metal came my way and I decided to use it to build one – thus saving a a little money. Of course you can get… Continue reading Building an English Wheel

99T part 3 – Undercoat and paint removal

There we go - the car on rotisserie.

We got the 99 Turbo up on the rotisserie – time to start removing the undercoating and the paint. It’s going to take a while, but it has to be done. Some pictures: So – I think this step is going to take a few weeks to complete…

Saab 99T Part 3 – Engine removed

Time to wash the engine bay.

We got the engine removed from the car yesterday. Today I didn’t have that much time to work on it, but managed to get the engine bay washed to check the corrosion situation. I expected there to be quite a bit to weld, but it turned out to be in good condition.
